NextGEN: Young Visionaries, a new dream, and the NEXTGen(eration)

At the July 2012 GEN Europe, Africa, and Middle East conference in Hungary, excited and motivated young people from across the globe re-enlivened the NextGEN group in this region of the world. The vision of NextGEN is to support and connect youth of the ecovillage movement, as well as connecting youth with the ecovillage philosophy globally. The dream is that NextGEN will shape the next generation of ‘ecovillagers’ on various levels, and give a space for young people to become active, inspired, and inspiring, within the ecovillage movement.

With the help of our generous host, the community of ZEGG in Bad Belzig, Germany, a small, but courageous team of organisers created a first planning meeting in early October. Initially, twenty people were expected, but fifty inspired young (and young at heart) ‘NEXTGeners’ heard the call and came!

Attendees included people from many European countries including Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Sweden, as well as from Canada, the USA, and Australia. All the participants are actively connected with numerous projects, initiatives and organizations around the world. Continue reading

NextGEN Fall Conference 2012 in ZEGG

From the 5th till 7th of October 2012, NextGEN Europe convened a meeting in the community of ZEGG, in Bad Belzig, Germany. Over forty people from ten different countries gathered to discuss further steps and actions of NextGEN following a preliminary meeting at the 2012 GEN Europe Conference in Krishna Valley, Hungary in July.

The conference started on Friday afternoon with an introduction of NextGEN and review of previous efforts and projects. The facilitators then led a Dreaming Circle using the Dragon Dreaming process developed by John Croft. Participants shared their ideas and visions about what NextGEN could be in the future and what would best make the organization able to fulfill their dreams. The next step of the process led to grouping of these ideas into three crucial topics: connections, communication and education. From this process, other areas emerged which led to more detailed planning in smaller working groups. The Sunday harvest of all the planning offered many promising goals, each with tasks and responsibilities associated with them. NextGEN intends to create a new and highly improved website, develop new methods of communication, generate a more effective way for participants to stay connected, and keep the heart-to-heart connections vibrant and alive. The group also intends to hold another meeting at the GEN conference in Schweibenalp next July! One more great project that emerged during this meeting is a group of inspired NextGENers who plan to ride bicycles to the conference in Schweibenalp, initiating the first MOBILE project of the NextGEN movement! After just two short days, attendees left ZEGG inspired, hopeful, and excited to form new friendships and social networks. Continue reading

NextGEN Conference 2011 in Tamera

Dreaming and celebrating are as important as planning and doing, if you want to make your dreams come true, says the Australian project consultant John Craft.

Sounds crazy, but it is extremely successful, over 700 projects all over the world have used this method to make their dreams come true.

One of these projects is the youth network NextGEN. From the 7th to the 11th of July 2011 over 40 young people from different ecovillages joined in Tamera where they were planning, celebrating and dreaming this organization into the world. But that is not the only thing that is special about this youth group. Because Next GEN is no organization, at least no organization the way we know it, it is a so called empty centered organization. This means there is no hierarchy and no council. Instead of a council there are common principles and a tool of communication. Continue reading
